SpaceX rocket carries the ashes of Scotty from ‘Star Trek’ and 307 others into space

James Doohan, the actor who famously portrayed Montgomery Scott, the chief engineer on the original Star Trek series, has finally made his way into space, albeit posthumously. The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket that successfully launched this morning carried on board the ashes of Doohan and 307 other people who had signed up for a so-called memorial spaceflight service.

New Pricing for iPad2 & “The new iPad” = Greater competition on high & low ends

The Thin Slice: Feeling pending pressure from successful low-end tablets like the Kindle Fire, and spec creep from quad-core Android tablets, Apple has made the reveal of “The new iPad” it’s pledge to continue competing in both arenas.

The thick of it…

The price-conscious low-end: Today, a brand new iPad2 will only run you $400, a full $100 less than yesterday and now only $200 more than a Kindle Fire. What’s more, Apple has placed further pressure on near 10inch Android tablets sometimes priced above the $500 mark. Feeling pressure from the impending iPad update, Samsung has already dropped the price of it’s Galaxy 10.1.

The spec-conscious high-end: For some consumers, price isn’t an issue, and here we’ve seen the rise of HD display and quad-core powered Android tablets to tempt their dollars. The new iPad now beats them all on resolution (a million more than standard HD), battery stamina and connectivity via 4G LTE, plus adds a respectable quad core graphics feature.

If “The new iPad” reveal hasn’t tempted consumers to queue up for pre-orders, the price drop of the previous generation has definitely piqued the interest of many a budget-sensitive buyer.

Dear tech writers: Eat your reviews, we like our Kindle Fires…

With reviews dubbing the Fire a “Tablet for Dummies” and “a bad app platform” it’s a wonder that we bought any at all.

The Thin Slice: Almost every review touted how much the Fire was NOT the iPad. Over the past few months, we’ve seen just how true that is, and how that’s exactly what we’ve been looking for.

Below: The Kindle Fire is on the cusp of becoming the most used Android tablet, after only 3 months on the market.

Apple’s profits ($13 billion) exceeded Google’s entire revenue ($10.6 billion)

This is actually the craziest chart about Apple following their insane earnings today.

There is exactly one company on that entire list that is not an oil and gas company. And they’re not that far from the top.

RIM CEO shakeup doesn’t matter. It’s too late.

RIM Twins

After steering Blackberry maker RIM into has-been status, the twin CEO’s are finally stepping down. Later this year, when the new CEO warms his seat, the new operating system rolls out, and the new Blackberry’s are vetted people will begin to talk about a comeback.

The Thin Slice: It won’t happen. Besides the fact that it’s products are failing, its revenue is down dead, and estimates have it down nearly 30% in the near future, whatever market share Blackberry had to gain from Apple, Google and the rest of the industry, has already been won by Microsoft

Even if the company isn’t purchased in the short-term, if there’s any success with RIM’s new operating system (QNX-based) or if it finally gets it’s Playbook together, the only area left for RIM to go will be the enterprise market. The consumer market is gone for them…

Apple just disrupted the textbook market. How publishers make money from $15 textbooks.

The Thin Slice: Apple just disrupted the $15 Billion textbook market a little more today with it’s new iBooks announcement. The question now is how anyone makes money on a $15 digital textbook that used to run for $75.

The hotel was constructed by a Chinese company specializing in sustainable architecture. The hotel is supposed to be five times more energy efficient that standard buildings, with six-inch thick glass curtain wall insulation and four-paned windows with built in shades.
